The Victorian government has announced an ambitious plan to address Melbourne’s housing crisis by unveiling 25 new activity centres. These centres, strategically located around train and tram stations, aim to boost housing density and affordability by changing planning rules. This initiative is part of a broader effort to create more high-rise living spaces in areas with excellent public transport connections.
Key Points:
New Locations: The government has identified 25 additional areas for high-rise development, adding to the 25 locations announced in October and 10 pilot sites, making a total of 60 activity centres.
Focus Areas: The new locations are primarily in Melbourne’s inner and outer south-east, including areas along the Cranbourne/Pakenham, Frankston, Glen Waverley, Sandringham, and Alamein train lines.
Government’s Goal: Premier Jacinta Allan emphasised the need to build more homes close to existing services and public transport to effectively address the housing crisis.
Community Consultation: The first round of community consultations for these new locations is set to begin in April, with the aim of finalising new planning rules by early 2026.
