Plumbing Industry Climate Action Centre (PICAC)
The Plumbing Industry Climate Action Centre (PICAC) is the first net zero energy education and research facility in Victoria. Designed specifically for the plumbing industry, the Centre supports research, product testing and certification. It is designed to meet the plumbing industry’s current and future training needs for evolving innovations and technologies.
The 5 Star Green Star-rated building is a functioning example of sustainability and innovation. With an innovative approach to sustainability, the building sources its own geothermal energy. It also uses renewable energy technologies and design to deliver water and energy savings and reduced gas emissions.
Miglic MacLeod worked with FMSA Architecture to provide civil and structural design services and built an enduring, collaborative relationship. We developed solutions on the wide range of considerations to be incorporated into the building, and ensured delivery of this unique, world-class facility.
The considerations included:
- Screw pile foundations
- Sustainability design
- Optimised orientation and exposure
- Training spaces design
- Water-sensitive urban design (WSUD) to preserve local protected fish species.
Environmentally friendly and energy efficient design and materials were implemented. Solar access was optimised through targeted exposure, deep overhangs and vertical shaded glazing, and stormwater run off was managed.
Miglic MacLeod's deep engagement and responsiveness, combined with our civil and structural expertise, ensured PICAC achieved their environmental aims reliably and efficiently.
