Miglic MacLeod provided structural and civil design services for a new two storey high end residence on Clara Street in South Yarra. The residence’s basement was to be repurposed as a car parking space. The overland flow path lying along the natural drainage gully, presented a significant challenge for the drainage design. This was addressed through a hydraulically operated flood gate at the entrance to protect the basement during a rainfall event.
A patterned Glassfibre Reinforced Concrete (GRC) skin cladding with a series of full height aluminium louvres is fixed to the floors at each level and protrude above the roof level to create a parapet. The structure of the above ground floor uses reinforced concrete slabs supported on loadbearing reinforced block walls. These provide strength and resilience for a building in an area exposed to water movement. Access was a particular challenge due to the narrowness of the site bounded by existing residences.
Miglic MacLeod’s engineers worked to maximise available space through softening and aesthetically pleasing greenery and increasing the availability of natural light. They also included features such as a garden terrace at roof level and voids and skylights designed and positioned to bring natural light inside the house space.
