St Jude’s Church

St Jude’s Church was founded and built in Carlton over 150 years ago. An example of gothic revival architecture, St Jude’s was one the first complete polychromatic churches to be built in Australia and is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.

After fire damaged the building in 2014, St Jude’s embraced the opportunity and looked to redevelop the church to better serve their vision as a cultural and educational hub for the local and international community.

Miglic MacLeod used heritage conservation knowledge and civil and structural engineering expertise to work with St Jude’s and realise their vision. Of concern was preserving the heritage value of the building while repairing structural damage and addressing inadequate teaching spaces and limited mobility access.

Our full design services included:

  • Demolition, excavation and construction with Heritage Victoria approvals
  • Increased exposure of the church to the surrounding streetscape
  • Underpinning of the church and construction of new lower level floorspace and grounds
  • Assessment and design of adequate drainage
  • Design and development of ground level terrace, external pavements and paths

With our responsive and collaborative approach, our capability and technical skills in civil and structural design, and our expertise as registered heritage consultants with Heritage Victoria, Miglic MacLeod worked closely with St Jude’s and redeveloped the church to be a welcoming, engaging and flexible space that retained and enhanced its heritage value.
