Star of the Sea – College

Star of the Sea College’s community was looking to transform the existing campus into a progressive village-style learning community with a focus on global citizenship. The campus has significant heritage value, and the master planning brief required particular considerations to be given to structural feasibility as well as preserving heritage.

Following our involvement in the master planning of the Star of the Sea College redevelopment, Miglic MacLeod was appointed to provide structural and civil engineering services for the redevelopment of the College’s century-old Heritage Wing.

While extensive alterations were required, the building’s heritage value had to be retained. Master planning involved:

  • Structural assessment of the existing building stock
  • General advice on access, parking and drainage
  • Adaptive reuse of the existing structures
  • 3D Revit modelling
  • An assessment report.

A portico enabling a major circulatory axis was created. This was made up of arched reinforced concrete beams and columns underpinning an existing two storey load. The existing variance in floor level throughout the Heritage Wing was also addressed and a vertical circulation hub in the form of a new lift and staircase was introduced.

Site constraints and the protection of the adjacent heritage buildings drove many of the design decisions
