Geelong High School

Geelong High School, opened in 1910, has been situated in Ryrie Street in East Geelong since 1915. The school secured funding in 2015 to rehabilitate and adapt the ageing grounds and buildings and better meet the needs of the school community.

Architects McGlashan Everist, who designed the three-stage redevelopment, engaged Miglic MacLeod to provide the civil and structural engineering services to achieve the aims of the school.

As well as adding a new building, the works involved alterations and extensions to the existing buildings, and the addition of ramps and a lift to improve accessibility.

The substantial changes to the building footprints and existing landscape not only required sensitive treatment of ageing structures but also affected the behaviour of water flows on the site.

Miglic MacLeod’s services included:

• Structural design
• Reuse and adaptation of existing frames, walls, floors and facades
• Excavation and underpinning of buildings
• Design and development of new pavements
• Design and development of kerb and channel and landscape to address drainage concerns.

Miglic MacLeod worked closely with the clients to ensure the development retained the school’s history while meeting educational, technological, and environmental needs.
